He’s my client's father.

That’s the sentence I repeat in the car, in the hallway, in the dark, in the exact tone I would use on somebody else at an ethics hearing.

But then, there are the facts:

I am thirty years old, and I have never been on a date.
I have a panic disorder and a service dog named Kitty.
My locking ritual must be run three times before I can leave my own apartment.

What I do not have is my license to practice therapy, and there’s exactly one thing standing between me and it.
Practicum hours. In person. No exceptions.

So, the single-client accommodation lands me with one boy in a mansion for a single semester.
The problem there? Hunter Brigham: Six-foot-three, tattooed, burn-scarred, and absent from his son’s life for fifteen years, and refuses to explain why.

He offers me the only exit that’s not a resignation. Let's be friends, he says, like a man who has never been anybody's friend in his life.

Neither of us can keep up the ruse.

He asks before he touches me. Every time. He makes me say what I want out loud, which is the hardest thing anyone has ever asked me to do. And his son, the boy whose file has my signature on it, gives us his blessing before either of us will say out loud what this is.

I could lose the degree. I could lose the license. I could lose the ten years it took me to build a life I can stand up in.
But I’m afraid more of what I’ll lose if I don’t say yes….
