We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you will threaten the man-- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

All my life, I was taught that in order for a man to marry me, I had to shrink. Shrink and be silent, so in my relationship, I did just that thinking it would take me from a Ms to a Mrs. Instead, shrinking made me feel undervalued, unseen, and unworthy. My boyfriend of three years never had any intention of making me seen, but I had no idea of the real storm on the horizon.
