If you let me tell it, my daddy wasn’t nowhere near a saint in the streets, and he damn sure ain’t raise me to be nobody’s cute little sweetheart either. More like one of the coldest hood chicks straight out of D.C.

I knew how to get what I wanted and didn’t care who had a problem with it. I loved my life, answered to myself, and wasn’t looking for a man to change that.

Then Scar came along.

He came barking orders off the rip. Telling instead of asking. Making demands like I’d already agreed to be his. And making it clear that if I acted up, Papa was gonna punish me.

And bad as I hate to admit it, I wanted to get fly at the mouth just to see if he stood on business like he claimed.

Now, I wasn’t used to a man standing ten toes down against me. But Scar wasn’t the type to back down, and I wasn’t the type to fold.

Somewhere between his strict program and my stubborn ways, I started wanting more than the back-and-forth. I wanted him. A relationship. A future I hadn’t made room for until he was in the picture.

For somebody who never planned on settling down, the thought of it was starting to sound better than I ever imagined. Not that I had much of a choice in the matter.

But while I was getting comfortable with the idea of loving somebody, I forgot one thing. Everything I had done in the dark wasn’t guaranteed to stay there.

And when my past finally caught up with me, I learned the hard way that some secrets don’t just come with consequences. They come with loaded Glocks and standoffs.

And when the smoke clears, everybody involved is gonna have a price to pay.
