What makes a family? How is it defined and by whom? Is freedom for everyone?

In Necessary Fiction, Eloghosa Osunde poses these provocative questions and many more while exploring the paths and dreams, hopes and fears of more than two dozen characters who are staking out lives for themselves in contemporary Nigeria.

Across Lagos, one of Africa’s largest urban areas and one of the world’s most dynamic cities, Osunde’s characters seek out love for self and their chosen partners, even as they risk ruining relationships with parents, spouses, family, and friends. As the novel unfolds, a rolling cast emerges: vibrantly active, stubbornly alive, brazenly flawed. These characters grapple with desire, fear, time, death, and God, forming and breaking unexpected connections; in the process unveiling how they know each other, have loved each other, and had their hearts broken in that pursuit.

As they work to establish themselves in the city’s lively worlds of art, music, entertainment, and creative commerce, we meet their collective and individual attempts to reckon with the necessary fiction they carry for survival.","format",{"_19":28,"_93":140,"_141":142,"_143":46},"publisher","Riverhead Books","page_count",320,"duration","published_date","pub_date","July 22","isbn","9780593851203","asin","059385120X","hex_code","#f8d828","language","English","purchase_links",[],"playlist_links",[],"cover","https://cdn.blackauthored.com/books/4466i/ed5e6299-4fc0-4af6-a753-3ef2142d84c1.jpg","thumb","https://img.blackauthored.com/?preset=poster_thumb&image=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.blackauthored.com%2Fbooks%2F4466i%2Fed5e6299-4fc0-4af6-a753-3ef2142d84c1.jpg","rating_distribution",{"_133":134,"_135":136},"tags",[84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91],{"_19":129,"_93":130,"_95":106,"_52":-5,"_50":131,"_98":132,"_100":46,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":125,"_93":126,"_95":106,"_52":-5,"_50":127,"_98":128,"_100":101,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":30,"_93":122,"_95":106,"_52":-5,"_50":123,"_98":124,"_100":46,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":118,"_93":119,"_95":106,"_52":-5,"_50":120,"_98":121,"_100":46,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":114,"_93":115,"_95":106,"_52":-5,"_50":116,"_98":117,"_100":46,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":110,"_93":111,"_95":106,"_52":-5,"_50":112,"_98":113,"_100":101,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":104,"_93":105,"_95":106,"_52":107,"_50":108,"_98":109,"_100":101,"_102":46,"_103":48},{"_19":92,"_93":94,"_95":96,"_52":-5,"_50":97,"_98":99,"_100":101,"_102":46,"_103":48},71,"name","Contemporary","category","setting","contemporary","url","/settings/contemporary","selectable",true,"sensitive","position",117,"Queer","genre","","queer","/genres/queer",26,"Young Adult","young-adult","/genres/young-adult",3,"Thriller","thriller","/genres/thriller",19,"Science Fiction","science-fiction","/genres/science-fiction","Romance","romance","/genres/romance",25,"Horror","horror","/genres/horror",4,"Fantasy","fantasy","/genres/fantasy","ratings",{},"recommend",{"_137":48,"_138":48,"_139":48},"yes","no","maybe","Hardcover","type","print","audio",{"_19":145,"_93":146,"_50":147,"_148":-5,"_149":-5,"_150":28,"_151":152,"_153":101},"aadd36f6-d3d5-4bc4-baf8-0dce5d845b72","Eloghosa Osunde","433-eloghosa-osunde","biography","image","books_count","roles",[154],"in_catalog","author","isLoggedIn",["P",156],"result","seo",{"_13":166,"_167":168,"_52":169,"_170":171,"_98":172,"_173":174,"_175":176},"user","themePreference","light","storedTheme","gaId","G-Z1HVZ17GZ3","Blackauthored","titleTemplate","%s","Find your next Black authored read and connect with readers with the similar taste.","handle","@blackauthored","https://blackauthored.com","robots",{"_190":46,"_191":46},"jsonLd",{"_177":178,"_179":180,"_93":166,"_181":182,"_183":184,"_98":172},"@context","https://schema.org","@type","Organization","logo","https://cdn.blackauthored.com/images/og-image.png","sameAs",[185,186,187,188,189],"https://twitter.com/blackauthored","https://facebook.com/blackauthored","https://instagram.com/blackauthored","https://youtube.com/blackauthored","https://tiktok.com/@blackauthored","noIndex","noFollow"]
