Where did Honey go? Is she okay?
Those were the questions left hanging after Honey disappeared, leaving the people closest to her confused, worried, and wondering what could’ve possibly pushed her to leave without looking back.
Honey never expected her life to unravel the way it did, but then again, she’s always gotten the short end of the stick. Survival is the one thing she knows better than anything because she’s never had the luxury of having somebody else carry the weight for her. She learned early that when life got heavy, she either carried it herself or got crushed underneath it.
After being evicted, losing a friendship, and finding herself back at square one, Honey is forced to make decisions that the people around her may never understand. The last thing she wants is to become anybody’s burden or overstay her welcome in a place where she knows the door can revolve at any moment. The people closest to her can tell her what they think she should do, but none of them know what it feels like to be in her shoes.
Demarcus wants to help, but Honey doesn’t know how to accept help without questioning the motive behind it. To her, help feels too much like pity, and pity always comes with strings attached. She’d rather struggle alone than give somebody the opportunity to remind her of everything they’ve done for her.
But struggling isn’t the only thing Honey has been doing in silence.
She’s carrying a secret that even the people closest to her know nothing about. And when everything she’s been trying desperately to keep buried finally comes to light, Honey will have no choice but to face the one person who has been determined to stand in her corner, even when she refuses to let him.
Demarcus has problems of his own too.
With one foot still connected to the streets and the other planted firmly inside the home and foundation he built from scratch, all Demarcus wants is to be a father to his son and protect the life he fought hard to create. He passed the throne years ago for a reason, but loose ends and somebody else’s careless decisions are pulling him back toward a life he thought he left behind.
Now, he has no choice but to clean up a mess he didn’t create.
Then there’s Honey.
Something about her reminds Demarcus of a love he once had and lost before he was ready to let go. Maybe that’s why walking away from Honey doesn’t come as easily as it should. The more she pushes him away, the more determined he becomes to prove that everybody who enters her life isn’t destined to hurt her.
Honey has heard promises before, though.
She’s watched people give their word and break it. She’s watched doors open for her just to be slammed in her face. So when Demarcus claims his intentions are genuine, believing him might be harder than anything she’s survived yet.
The question is, how long will Demarcus keep fighting for a woman who refuses to believe she’s worth fighting for?
And when Honey’s secret finally comes to light, will he still be standing in her corner, or will she finally have proof that everybody leaves eventually?
